History
The prohibition movement started much earlier than the 1920s. The roots of the ban can be traced to the nineteenth century and even parts of the late 18th century. In 1830 the average person over 15 years old consumed nearly seven gallons of pure alcohol daily. Alcoholism and abuse were rampant. Women felt obligated to combat the apparent source of this abuse, alcohol. Thus started the movement for temperance. The temperance movement was promoted primarily by women most of whom were very religious.
Today
Yes, the WCTU ,Woman's Christian Temperance Union, is still kicking (Currently hovering around a whopping 25,000 members!). They push for prohibition but we have nothing to fear unless the 25,000/ 315,191,138 win through popular vote...
